I realize everyone has an opinion on this and w/e but OH MY GOD PLEASE FOR ALL THAT IS GOOD AND PURE AND SEXY IN THIS WORLD STAY OUT OF YOUR FANFICTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes I realize its your fanfiction so you as the author have creative licenses and what ever but really no one wants to read about how you and Edward Cullen ran off in to the misty moon light to go and have oh so sparkly vampire/werwolf/mermaid/furry/wizard babies. I'm serious no one wants to read it. There's a reason its called FANfiction. Its supposed to be about some one else's work with there characters and your own plot. At no point should you be adding your self to this equation. This includes but is not limited to a characters lover, best friend, long lost twin sister separated at birth and given super uber kawi powers that will allow you to save the world... are you getting the feeling? let me make one thing clear I AM NOT OPPOSED TO OC's AS A WHOLE!!!!!! They can be perfectly acceptable when they serve a real purpose. They can even have plot importance but they really shouldn't have a whole lot of screen time, especially if that time is spent making out with a character already in the series. The other major problem with OC's is nine times out of ten you can find a character in the Fandom your using to serve the OC's purpose. To summarize kill all your self-inserts/ Marry Sues, or at least leave them of the internet where other people might find them. OC's are okay in moderation, and when they have a real purpose to fill.
When writing dialogue:
This is a rather popular trend among new writers and it needs to stop. Now. A lot of the dialogue in new fanfictions looks like this:
One day Bob and Fred were walking through the park."Hey what's up?" said Bob. "Not much" said Fred "Wanna go to a movie?" "Sure""Great what time should I meet you?""I don't know around Seven-thirty""Sounds great Bob""Awesome see you there"Fred and Bob hugged and went home....
I realize this is not the greatest piece of writing but it gets my point across and thats is start and new paragraph and indent when you change speakers. As you could see in the above conversation it easily got confusing as to whom was speaking. This is a very easy thing to fix watch
One day Bob and Fred were walking through the park."Hey what's up?" said Bob.
"Not much" said Fred
"Wanna go to a movie?"
"Sure""Great what time should I meet you?"
"I don't know around Seven-thirty"
"Sounds great Bob"

See now its easy to tell whose speaking!!!! yay!!!!!! Any way My sis is begging me to go to sleep so I shall continue my rant some other time....
This thing basically came out of wanting to read a fanfiction and not being able to find anything understandable and without annoying OC's....

Rant on OOC-ness
Okay, this is a major problem in most fanfiction. If your going to write a fanfiction know your characters. Plain and simple. If the character is a quiet if slightly brash samurai who swears minimally in canon then he should be a quiet if slightly brash samurai who swears minimally in your fanfiction. He should not cuss every other word because you think it makes him seem sexier or what ever. That is called being OOC and it is bad. Very Bad. and it happens all the time and it needs to stop!!! Like wise if a character has a very specific speech pattern in universe that doesn't make sense in alternate universe's find a way to keep it similar. To take an example from One Piece, the CP9 member Kaku adds "ja" to the ends of words or sentences. He is also very polite. In a alternate universe fanfiction adding "ja" might sound a little strange so get rid og the "ja" but please try and keep him polite. It will sound a lot better that way and your readers will appreciate the continuity. Like wise if the character has something she or she does in canon then try to keep it in your fanfiction. Small traits, speech patterns, and personalities should be as close to canon a possible when writing fanfiction.
When writing a summery of your fic:
On fanfiction.net the site allows you to give a quick blurb about the fic here are the don'ts when writing a summery.
Don't make it complex. Try to summarize the fic in one sentence. A summery should let the reader know what the fic is basically about, not everything that is going to happen. Some of the most effective summaries simply state the pairing, weather its in universe or alternate universe, and the warnings (yaoi, yuri, het, pwp ect)
Don't say "This is my first time writing a fanfiction and I suck at summaries but its really good so please read it any way" I know writers have insecurities (Mine has been named Roger-ides) but your readers don't want to know you have insecurities. I won't tell you how many times I have ignored a fic because the aforementioned sentence. Every one has a first time your not special.
Titling Your Fanfiction
I am so sick of reading fics with crap-tastic titles. Not to be mean or anything but please put some thought into what you title your stuff. Characters names should NEVER NEVER NEVER appear in your title. It's cheesy and unprofessional. The word love probably shouldn't appear unless your really clever with it. Titles should short, sweet and memorable. This can be hard so think carefully about it!!
Other thoughts you might have when writing a fic
I see that a lot of people are writing (insert cliche here) so I should write one too right? Wrong. Be creative with your plots. Its more fun to have a variety of things to read then fifty re-hashings of the same story. Make your self unique its a much better way to get readers
Does song fic mean I put song lyrics in the fic randomly braking up my text. Dear god please don't. Doing that is boring confusing and just bad. I will tell you right now I have never read a good song fic that had the lyrics in the text. You can however base a fic off a song or songs and tell the reader to listen to that song as they read the fic. This is a good way to incorporate the song with out it overwhelming the story and your hard work.

On swearing.
This is something I sort of touched on before but I feel it needs to be reiterated. IF THE CHARACTER DOES NOT SWEAR IN CANON DO NOT MAKE THEM SWEAR IN YOUR FANFICTION. I'm completely serious about this one because it is really getting on my nerves. I realize some characters swear all the time. Most, however don't. Except in fanfiction and then everyone has apparently deiced that ALL characters swear ALL the time. Let me explain when it is appropriate for a character who does not normally swear to swear. If their best friend in the world is dying, then they may swear. If they are really really pissed off then they may swear. If they have just been stabbed swearing may be appropriate. Please people think when your going to make a character swear. If the f-bomb is dropped twenty thousand times it does not make you a better writer. It usually makes you look immature.
